Air India names ex-Ethiopian Airlines chief to lead turnaround

Air India picked former Ethiopian Airlines chief Tewolde Gebremariam as CEO, handing its turnaround to an executive known for expanding Africa’s largest carrier and steering it through major crises. He will succeed Campbell Wilson, who resigned in April and is due to leave on Sept. 30. Gebremariam steps in as Tata Group’s airline posts heavy losses and remains under tighter regulatory scrutiny after the June 2025 crash of Flight 171 shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 crash killed 241 of 242 people aboard and 19 on the ground. Air India Group posted a record loss of more than $2 billion in fiscal 2025-26, while Chairman N Chandrasekaran has warned the overhaul could take up to a decade.
