AI startup sues US after Anthropic cuts model access for Canadians
What's new: Legion says the shutdown of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 threatens its survival as export controls hit foreign nationals.
A U.S. litigation-tech startup has sued the federal government after Anthropic blocked access to its most advanced AI models for some foreign nationals under new export controls. The complaint, filed June 23 in federal court in Washington, says Legion lost access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 even though the company is based in the United States. Legion said Canadian software developers working from Canada were affected, disrupting product development and sidelining engineers. The suit names Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and challenges an order requiring Anthropic to get government permission before exporting the models outside the U.S. or to foreign nationals anywhere. Legion called the damage immediate and existential.
