Agus urges prisons to focus on character, reintegration

Children in custody are being included in supervised joint activities as part of a more humane approach.

Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto urged rehabilitation in the corrections system to focus not only on security, but also on character building, recovery and the social reintegration of inmates. He said involving children in custody in joint activities could be part of a more humane and inclusive approach, while supervision remains in place. Agus said space to take part in positive activities is important so children in custody can build self-confidence, sportsmanship, discipline and social skills. He said those tools are needed when they return to society. In Sulawesi Utara, Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections Haposan Silalahi also stressed directed rehabilitation to encourage changes in the behavior of corrections inmates.
