AFP probes alleged rape of Australian activist by Israel forces

The probe followed a Canberra meeting with four activists; Israel denied the allegations and said it had seen no credible evidence.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has opened an investigation into alleged rape, torture and abuse of Australian activists detained by Israel forces after a aid flotilla bound for Gaza was intercepted on May 18. Four women activists from Global Sumud met Foreign Minister Penny Wong and senior police officials in Canberra on Monday. After the meeting, Juliet Lamont said AFP had committed to an independent investigation into allegations of kidnapping, harassment, rape and torture. AFP confirmed it had begun inquiries into a report submitted by representatives of the group. Eleven Australians were among hundreds of activists detained when the flotilla was carrying food, medicine and infant formula to the Gaza Strip. The Israel Embassy in Canberra denied the allegations and said it had not received any credible evidence or formal complaint.
