AFA, CAF back Infantino amid World Cup share row

Support from Argentina and Africa boosts Infantino's vote base ahead of the next FIFA Congress, even as UEFA, AFC and Concacaf oppose him.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have voiced support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino as his position came under scrutiny over a plan to sell a stake in the World Cup competition to private investors that was later scrapped. AFA said Infantino's leadership over the past 10 years has helped drive global football development and strengthen FIFA governance. In Africa, the CAF Executive Committee unanimously backed an update with Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom on FIFA Forward Enterprise. CAF President Patrice Motsepe acknowledged mistakes in the process behind the proposal, but reaffirmed commitments to governance, transparency and cooperation with FIFA. The backing comes as several other confederations, including UEFA, AFC and Concacaf, oppose the idea and have withdrawn support for the next presidential election.
