Aceh Selatan declares 14-day flood emergency

The Aceh Selatan regency government has declared a 14-day flood emergency after flooding inundated two gampong in Trumon Tengah District. The Aceh Selatan Regional Disaster Management Agency said 112 residents from Gampong Cot Bayu and Gampong Lhok Raya have evacuated to the Brimob company compound and relatives' homes. Water levels were reported at between 30 and 60 centimeters. Aceh Selatan Regent Mirwan MS said the emergency status is intended to speed up response efforts and raise preparedness because heavy rainfall is still expected in the next few days. The regency government has also distributed emergency aid and set up a public kitchen at the evacuation post at Kompi Brimob, Gampong Ie Jerineh. Lhok Raya village head Rasi Riadi said the flooding was triggered by the collapse of a embankment on the Lae Soeraya River, causing river water to overflow into residential areas.
