Abiy's Prosperity Party wins 438 seats in Ethiopia election

What's next: Abiy Ahmed is set to begin another term in October as fighting in Amhara and Oromia and turmoil in Tigray persist.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's Prosperity Party secured another commanding parliamentary majority, winning 438 of the 501 contested seats in this month's election. The result gives the party far more than the 274 seats needed for control of the 547-seat lower house. Voting did not take place in Tigray and in at least eight constituencies in Amhara, while 143 polling stations failed to open in Amhara and Oromia because of security concerns. The election unfolded against continuing insurgencies involving Fano in Amhara and the Oromo Liberation Army in Oromia, as well as renewed tensions in Tigray after the 2022 peace deal that ended a devastating civil war.
