Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary, will face Mike Rogers

Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won Michigan’s Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate after overnight vote counting, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in a contest that exposed the party’s split between progressives and centrists. El-Sayed, a former Detroit and Wayne County health official backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, will face former Rep. Mike Rogers in November for the seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters. Stevens had support from more establishment Democrats and benefited from heavier outside spending.
