Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary, setting up test in swing state

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in a closely fought contest that exposed a split between the party’s progressive base and its establishment wing. With more than 95% of the vote counted, Associated Press tallies cited by CNN Indonesia showed El-Sayed at about 48.5% to Stevens’ 47.5%; another CNN Indonesia report said he led by 14,893 votes, less than 1 percentage point, out of more than 1.5 million ballots. El-Sayed, a former Wayne County public health official backed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, advances to face Republican Mike Rogers in November. Stevens had support from Democratic leaders and heavy outside spending, including $32 million from AIPAC, according to the BBC.
