Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary, jolting Democrats

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens despite backing from party leaders and heavy outside spending for his rival. The former Michigan health official ran with support from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, pressing for government-backed health insurance, lower drug costs, higher taxes on wealthy Americans and campaign finance changes.
