Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary, faces Rogers

Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat, narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens. The Associated Press, as cited by several reports, said El-Sayed had about 48.5% of the vote with more than 95% of ballots counted. CNN Indonesia reported his margin was 14,893 votes out of more than 1.5 million ballots. The victory by the former Wayne County health official jolted the Democratic establishment after Stevens received heavy backing from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. El-Sayed, 41, will now be the Democratic nominee against Republican Mike Rogers in the November election. He campaigned on Medicare for All, lower drug prices, campaign finance reform and higher taxes on the wealthy.
