Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Democratic Senate primary by under 1 point
What's next: He advances to a high-stakes November race against Republican Mike Rogers that could help decide Senate control.
Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's Democratic primary for US Senate, narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in a contest that exposed Democratic tensions over ideology, money and electability in a key battleground state. With more than 1.5 million ballots counted, El-Sayed led by fewer than 15,000 votes, or just under 1 percentage point. The former Michigan public health official ran with support from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while Stevens had backing from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, outgoing Sen. Gary Peters and major outside spending. El-Sayed will face former Republican congressman Mike Rogers in November in a race with implications for control of the Senate.
