Abdul El-Sayed Edges Out in Michigan Democratic Senate Primary

Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan by a narrow margin over Haley Stevens. With more than 95 percent of the vote counted, Associated Press reported El-Sayed with about 48.5 percent and Stevens with 47.5 percent. The result stood out because Stevens had the backing of heavy political spending from the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC, which reports said spent more than US$30 million. El-Sayed, a doctor and former Wayne County health director, campaigned with support from progressive figures including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In the November election, he will be the Democratic candidate against Republican Mike Rogers.
