85% to 90% of Ciniru Kuningan landfill area burns
The blaze damaged gas pipelines at the TPSA, while police are preparing to probe whether negligence or arson was involved.
About 85% to 90% of the Ciniru Final Waste Disposal Site (TPSA) in Kuningan Regency, West Java, burned, the Kuningan Environment Agency said. Usep Sumirat said the estimate was based on the volume of scorched trash, though the depth of the burned section has not yet been determined. Fire was also found beneath an old layer of dry waste that had not been covered with soil. The roughly 5.6-hectare TPSA receives an average of 200 tons of waste per day from 114 villages and urban wards. The fire also damaged the gas pipeline network at the sanitary landfill facility. Kuningan Police are preparing an investigation after extinguishing and cooling work is complete to determine whether negligence or deliberate action was involved. A joint team is still trying to contain the fire so it does not spread to nearby residents' land.
