67-year-old dies in Jurong East flat fire; 50 residents evacuated
What's new: Police do not suspect foul play, and firefighters forced entry after smoke poured from a third-floor unit.
A 67-year-old man died after a fire broke out in a third-floor flat at Block 339 Jurong East Avenue 1 in Singapore early Aug. 16, prompting the evacuation of about 50 residents. The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted at about 3:55 a.m. and found black smoke coming from the unit's living room. Firefighters forced their way into the flat and found the man unresponsive inside. An SCDF paramedic pronounced him dead at the scene. The fire, which involved items in the living room, was put out with one water jet. Police said preliminary findings showed no foul play, and the investigation is continuing. The death follows several other fatal residential fires involving older residents in recent weeks.
