61 Indonesian nationals detained in Timor Leste in scam raid
Also: 6 Indonesians fled during the raid, 1 is suspected of being a supervisor, and at least 5 had worked in a Cambodia scam center.
A total of 61 Indonesian nationals were detained in Timor Leste after local authorities raided an online scam center on June 27. The Foreign Ministry said 67 Indonesians were initially caught up in the operation, but six escaped while it was under way. All of the detained Indonesians are still under investigation, so there is no certainty yet that they can be repatriated to Indonesia soon. Heni Hamidah, director for the protection of Indonesian citizens at the Foreign Ministry, said further review found that one person was suspected of serving as a supervisor. The ministry also found that at least five of the Indonesians had previously worked in Kamboja. The findings reinforce indications that scam networks are shifting to other Southeast Asian countries after major raids in Kamboja.
