6.1 earthquake off Cuba rattles Florida and Mexico, no major damage

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Cuba's northwest coast on June 8, shaking western Cuba, Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and much of Florida, according to the US Geological Survey and local authorities. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 26 kilometers, with its epicenter about 104 to 118 kilometers west-northwest of Cuba near Mantua. Officials in Cuba, Miami and Mexico's Quintana Roo and Yucatan states reported no major damage or casualties. Emergency protocols were activated in parts of Mexico, while Miami received multiple service calls after the tremor. The US Tsunami Warning Center and National Weather Service said there was no significant tsunami danger.
