4-Meter Waves Threaten Southern DIY Coast Through Aug. 16

In Gunungkidul, 22 boats were damaged, two sank and the Buluk-Krakal connecting bridge was torn apart by waves.

BMKG warned of high waves of 2.5 to 4 meters that could hit the southern waters of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta on 13-16 August 2026. The warning covers the waters off Kulon Progo, Bantul, and Gunungkidul, as well as the Indian Ocean south of Java. Head of the Yogyakarta Class II Meteorology Station Feriomex Hutagalung said the conditions were triggered by easterly winds reaching 17 knots, or 32 km per hour. In Gunungkidul, large waves since 10 August have damaged 22 fishing boats. At Pantai Baron, 11 boats were affected, including four badly damaged. At Pantai Gesing, four boats were heavily damaged, two sank at the dock and five sustained minor damage. The surf also severed the bridge linking Pantai Buluk and Pantai Krakal and caused minor damage to a stall at Pantai Jungwok.
