30-year-old woman badly injured in Coogee Beach shark attack
The closures come amid a string of deadly shark incidents in Australia, including fatal attacks last week and in May.
A 30-year-old woman was rushed to hospital after being attacked by a shark while swimming at Sydney's Coogee Beach on Saturday morning. Police said the victim was bitten while in the water and pulled ashore by nearby residents, who then gave first aid before emergency crews arrived. The victim suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg and was evacuated by helicopter to hospital. After the incident, authorities closed Coogee Beach and two nearby beaches, Clovelly and Bronte. The attack came amid a series of shark incidents in Australia: last week, a 35-year-old fisherman was killed off Western Australia, while on 24 May Michael Jensz, 39, died at the Great Barrier Reef, and on 16 May Steve Mattabonni, 38, died near Rottnest Island.
