3 Indian Seafarers Killed After U.S. Attack on Ship off Oman

The deaths prompted India to lodge a sharp protest with Washington and summon a U.S. diplomat in New Delhi.

Three Indian seafarers who had been missing after the tanker MT Settebello was attacked by the U.S. military off the coast of Oman have now been confirmed dead. India’s Transport Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the bodies of the three had been recovered and identified. The Palau-flagged ship carried 28 crew members, including 24 Indians, when it was attacked in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Indian government, 21 seafarers were rescued. CENTCOM earlier said the strike was carried out because the ship was suspected of failing to follow U.S. instructions and of continuing to transport Iranian oil. New Delhi then summoned Jason Meeks, deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy, to convey a strong protest over the attack on the commercial vessel.
