3 impeachment charges against Sara Duterte dropped, 1 remains
The Philippine Senate now weighs only alleged unexplained wealth, a case that could still block Sara Duterte from the 2028 presidential race.
The Philippine House impeachment prosecutors on Tuesday (13/10) dropped three of the four charges against Vice President Sara Duterte, leaving the Senate trial focused on a single article on allegedly unexplained wealth. Lead prosecutor Gerville Jinky Luistro said the prosecution chose to narrow the case so the impeachment court could handle it more practically. The withdrawn charges covered alleged misuse of confidential funds, bribery, and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and Martin Romualdez. The defense team led by Sheila Sison objected, saying dropping the charges deprived Sara of the chance to answer the allegations. If convicted, Sara could be removed from office and barred from holding public office, including running in the 2028 presidential election.
