20-year-old copilot texted about ice before Florida Learjet crash

Investigators suspect the plane broke apart in the air; radio recordings also captured the crew reporting turbulence and icing before the emergency.

The Learjet 60 crash in Palm Beach County, Florida, that killed nine people is now revealing the final moments before the aircraft went down. The family of 20-year-old copilot Nathalia Filgueiras said she texted her boyfriend around 12.40 local time that the plane was experiencing turbulence and ice buildup. The jet was flying from Austin to the Bahamas and crashed about 10 minutes later. LiveATC recordings show the crew asked for a better altitude, then reported rain and requested a climb from 35.000 feet to 37.000 feet. One of the pilots later declared an emergency while describing a very rapid descent. NTSB member Tom Chapman said there were indications the aircraft broke into pieces before hitting the ground. Flightradar24 data also showed a brief climb followed by a sharp right turn before the last signal disappeared.
