2 Singapore-registered ships hit in Hormuz; 1 sinks, crews safe
Why it matters: The strait carried about a fifth of global oil and LNG trade before the US-Iran war began on Feb. 28.
Two Singapore-registered container ships were hit by unknown projectiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, and one later sank, Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said Wednesday. GFS Pride was struck on Oct. 13, caught fire and went down after its crew of 21 was evacuated. GFS Giselle was hit on Oct. 14, suffered hull damage and reached a safe anchorage under its own power; all 22 crew members were safe. No injuries were reported, and no Singaporeans were aboard either vessel. The authority said it was in contact with the ships’ management company and condemned the continuing attacks on commercial shipping as breaches of international law.
