2 missiles hit Qeshm Island as Iran claims downing US MQ-9 drone

No official damage assessment has been released, while Qatar says Iran-U.S. talks to end the conflict are still underway.

Two projectiles struck the Suza area on Iran's southern Qeshm Island on Saturday, according to an initial report by Tasnim and witnesses quoted by IRNA. The outlet said the sound of an aircraft was heard before the impact, but Iranian authorities have not released official information on the effect of the attack. A day earlier, Iran's military claimed its air defenses shot down a MQ-9 drone belonging to the United States over Qeshm. Washington has not responded to the claim. Qeshm is in Hormozgan Province, near the northern entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping lane amid tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel. At the same time, Qatar denied reports that talks to end the Iran-U.S. war had failed and said mediation was still under way.
