2 fishermen survive 5 days adrift off Mexico in a cool box
Why it matters: The men were found about 150 miles off Chiapas after a fishing cooperative reported losing contact with them.
Two fishermen were rescued alive after drifting for five days in the Pacific off Mexico’s Chiapas coast inside a cool box normally used to store fish. The Mexican Navy found the men, ages 53 and 32, on Aug. 19 about 150 miles, or roughly 241 kilometers, offshore after a search launched when their fishing cooperative lost contact with them on Aug. 15. Naval authorities medically evaluated both men after the rescue before reuniting them with their families. The case drew attention because the pair survived at sea using the insulated box as flotation until rescuers reached them.
