2 dead after boat capsizes near Statue of Liberty; operator charged

What's new: Police filed 13 reckless endangerment counts as the Coast Guard examines whether the boat was operating as an illegal charter.

A boat operator was arrested after a vessel overturned near Liberty Island in New York Harbor on Saturday night, killing a 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old girl. Police said a 911 call came in around 10:25 p.m. reporting the capsized boat. A nearby vessel pulled 12 people from the water before responders arrived. NYPD divers later recovered the woman and infant, who were taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn and pronounced dead. The 46-year-old Manhattan resident who operated the boat faces 13 counts of reckless endangerment. The U.S. Coast Guard, NYPD, Fire Department boats and a police helicopter joined the rescue. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the vessel to overturn.
