2 Chinese World Cup fans robbed at gunpoint in Mexico City

What's new: Mexican authorities detained one suspect after the airport-area holdup and the Chinese Embassy issued a safety advisory.

Two Chinese football fans visiting Mexico City for the World Cup were robbed at gunpoint shortly after arriving in the capital, and Mexican authorities have detained one suspect. The men, identified in reports as Wang Kun and Li Zhe, landed on June 10 and were heading from Benito Juárez International Airport to the city center when two masked attackers stopped them, took passports, bags, laptops, cash and luxury watches, and fled. Wang said a gun was pressed against his head during the 30- to 40-second robbery. The Chinese Embassy in Mexico confirmed the case, said it pushed Mexican authorities to investigate, and urged citizens to avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuables. The two men later returned to China.
