174,791 inmates and juvenile offenders get Independence Day remission
As a result, 3,563 inmates and 28 juvenile offenders were released immediately, while the state saved about Rp358.9 billion in food costs.
A total of 174,791 inmates and juvenile offenders across Indonesia received general remission and sentence reductions on the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia on Monday (17/8). Of that total, 173,706 inmates received general remission and 1,085 juvenile offenders received general sentence reductions. A total of 3,563 inmates were released immediately after receiving remission, while 170,143 others must still serve the rest of their sentences. For juvenile offenders, 28 were released immediately and 1,057 continued their rehabilitation. The symbolic handover took place at Politeknik Imigrasi dan Pemasyarakatan. The three regions with the most general remission recipients were Jawa Barat with 19,269, Sumatera Utara with 18,222, and Jawa Timur with 14,673. The government also granted additional remission to 47 inmates at Lapas Kelas IIB Kuala Simpang after the 2025 Sumatera floods.
