150,000 rally in Belgrade ahead of Serbia election
The rally is the toughest electoral test for Aleksandar Vucic after 14 years of his camp in power.
About 150,000 people took to central Belgrade on October 22 to back the Student List, a movement of student-backed candidates challenging the Serbian Progressive Party in the October 25 parliamentary election. According to Archive of Public Gatherings, the crowd filled Slavija Square and nearby streets. The protest wave began with the collapse of the canopy at the newly renovated Novi Sad train station in 2024, which killed 16 people, a tragedy widely linked to corruption. Under pressure, Aleksandar Vucic stepped down as president in September and ran as a candidate for prime minister. Several civil society groups have warned that the campaign has been marked by intimidation, arrests, attacks, misuse of public resources and an uneven media environment.
