11 Little Aresha caregivers get 2-3 years in Yogyakarta
Judge also imposed a Rp60 million fine on each defendant, but removed restitution previously sought by prosecutors.
The Yogyakarta District Court on Wednesday (28/10) sentenced 11 caregivers at Daycare Little Aresha to prison terms of 2 to 3 years in a case involving child abuse and neglect. A panel led by Sunaryanto found all defendants guilty of jointly placing the children in abusive and neglectful treatment, as well as of continuing violence against children. Sri Rejeki received 3 years in prison; Devina Riadi, Evi Nurvita Sari, Dinar Olivia Susan and Fitri Nurhidayah each received 2 years; and the other six defendants each received 2,5 years. The court also imposed a Rp60 million fine on each person, with a substitute sentence of 52 days if unpaid. The ruling was lighter than prosecutors' request for 5 years in prison, a Rp250 million fine and about Rp14 million in restitution per defendant. The victims' parents said they were disappointed and hoped prosecutors would appeal.
