10 climbers, led by Nirmal Purja, missing after Broad Peak avalanche

What's next: Pakistani officials are trying to launch a helicopter rescue Friday morning, weather permitting.

An international team of 10 climbers led by Nepal-born mountaineer Nirmal Purja is feared missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range around midday Thursday. Pakistani mountaineering officials said there had been no communication with the group after the slide on the 8,047-meter mountain. The Alpine Club of Pakistan said the team included six Nepalis, plus one climber each from the United States, China, Pakistan and Oman. Purja is widely known for climbing all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters in just over six months in 2019. Club vice president Karrar Haidri said authorities were coordinating efforts to arrange a helicopter rescue on Friday morning, depending on weather.
