1 dies, 2 firefighters burned in Clementi apartment fire

A late-night fire in a public housing unit in Singapore's Clementi area left one person dead and two firefighters with burn injuries. The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted at about 11:10 p.m. on July 31 to a blaze at Block 309 Clementi Avenue 4. Firefighters arrived to find the living room of an eighth-floor unit on fire and forced entry before putting it out with two water jets. During the operation, they found a person trapped in the kitchen and took the victim to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where the person later died. Two firefighters were sent to Singapore General Hospital. One has since been discharged. About 40 residents were evacuated as a precaution. Sim Ann said overall damage to nearby units and common areas was limited.
